Embracing the Outdoors: Our Volunteer Day at Te Raekaihau

Last month, our team took a break from the office and headed out to the stunning Te Raekaihau reserve in Houghton Bay for our annual Volunteer Day. Situated on Wellington’s rugged South Coast, Te Raekaihau offers breathtaking views over the Cook Strait and across to the South Island. This year, we were fortunate to spend our day contributing to the preservation of this land.

Our Volunteer Day is a key part of our “Day for You, Day for Us” programme, which reflects our commitment to the wellbeing of our people and our community. Each year we find a project that resonates with us, our work, or our clients. This year, the choice of Te Raekaihau was perfect — a chance to connect with nature and contribute to a cause that aligns with our values.

Our day was filled with native tree planting, weeding, track maintenance and a fair few cuddles with the dogs. We gathered for lunch at the Alice Kerbs Lodge, where we took in the stunning surroundings and the impact of our efforts.

Te Raekaihau has a rich history and deep cultural significance. The reserve has been a place of connection for centuries, and today it’s cared for by Te Ohu o Te Raekaihau, a dedicated volunteer group formed in 2021. Their mission is to restore the indigenous connections of Te Raekaihau over the next 800 years, ensuring that this special place remains a sanctuary for generations to come.

We’re incredibly grateful to Te Ohu o Te Raekaihau for their leadership and vision, and we’re proud to have played a small part in their ongoing work. A special thanks to everyone who participated in making this day such a success.

As we continue our “Day for You, Day for Us” programme, we look forward to finding more ways to give back and strengthen our connection to the communities and environments that support us.
