MINTaro hut
DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION - MILFORD TRACK, FIORDLAND
The Department of Conservation’s new Mintaro Hut opened to the public in October 2021. Located on the Milford Track in Fiordland, the new hut was a much-needed replacement as the old Mintaro
Hut was found to be located in a potential rockfall zone.
Sun studies were completed to help choose the new location, which is 1.5km up the valley from the original hut. The new sunsoaked position helps passively heat the hut and power the solar
lighting.
A key design feature is the large portal frames in the communal area, that provide an open plan with uninterrupted views outside. With a backdrop of the Ōmanui Mackinnon Pass, this backcountry hut stands out among the rest.
For sense of place, a pouwhenua guards the entrance telling the Ngāi Tahu creation story. With a focus on sustainability and durability, the end result is a hut that can last more than 50 years without the need for significant upgrades or renovations.
